As you’re working hard to achieve your goals, the last thing you want is for a dental problem to distract you. That’s why you should be committed to tooth-friendly habits that will protect your smile from issues like decay and gum disease. Here are a few reminders from a family dentist that will help you achieve a maintain a healthier smile in 2019.

Brush Thoroughly

Most people are diligent about brushing their teeth at least twice a day, but it’s important that you brush correctly in order to deliver the greatest benefits to your oral health. You should:

  • Brush for a total of about two minutes, spending 30 seconds on each quadrant of your teeth.
  • Don’t forget to brush along the gum line and the backs of your teeth.
  • Use gentle, short strokes.

Floss Daily

Sadly, the majority of people do not floss as often as they should. They may not realize just how important this habit is. Your toothbrush cannot reach the tight spaces in between your teeth. Therefore, if you do not floss, plaque and food particles can accumulate there and contribute to decay and discoloration.

Try placing your floss somewhere out in the open so it serves as a visual reminder to help you get into the habit of using it. You can also recruit your family members and make it your resolve to remind each other to floss every day.

Cut Back on Sugar

When sugar interacts with the bacteria in your mouth, plaque forms on your teeth and eventually leads to decay. Therefore, you should always keep an eye on how much of the sweet stuff you’re consuming. Here are a few tips to help you cut back:

  • Make plain water, rather than soda or juice, your beverage of choice.
  • Check nutrition labels. Some foods, like yogurt and certain sauces, may have a lot more sugar than you thought.
  • Chew gum or suck on sugar-free candy when you’re craving something sweet.

Visit Your Dentist

Never underestimate the power of routine dental care. Regular checkups can identify oral health problems while they’re still in their earliest stages. Cleanings are also vital because your hygienist will do more than make your mouth feel nice and fresh. They’ll also coach you on how you can improve your oral hygiene routine at home; for example, they can show you proper flossing technique and recommend products that will help you achieve your cleanest, healthiest smile.

Have you been holding back from visiting the dentist due to anxiety? Remember that your dental team wants to do everything they can to help you have a positive attitude about oral health care. Sedation may even be available to help you relax.

How are your dental habits? Improve your oral care habits so you can have a 2019 that is full of healthy, happy smiles.
