When Should My Child See the Dentist for the First Time?

Among the “firsts” that your child will experience, their initial visit to the dentist may not be one you are necessarily planning for. But did you know that having their growing teeth checked out is a vital step that will put them on the road to a healthy smile that lasts for a lifetime? Keep reading to find out more about that first appointment and when you should schedule it for your little one.

When to Schedule Your Child’s Appointment

It may seem very early, but it is a good idea to book your little one’s initial appointment at the dental office between the ages of one and three. You will know when the time is right for your own child, as some tolerate it better earlier than others. After that, regular checkups and cleanings should begin no later than age five. Starting these visits on time will help to ensure that your child feels comfortable at the dentist — so they never fear coming back for the care that keeps their teeth clean and healthy!

What to Expect during a First Visit

The first appointment is a chance for your child to meet the dental team and adjust to being in the environment. Your little one may prefer to sit in your lap throughout the visit. The dental hygienist(s) and dentist will all get the chance to meet and spend time with your child before taking a quick look around their mouth to make sure any teeth that have erupted look healthy. The hygienist will also give those pearly whites a quick polish — and that is it. The team will send you both on your way with plans to see you again as soon as is necessary.

You will also have the chance to ask any questions you may have about your child’s oral health and keeping their teeth clean during this appointment.

Some questions parents frequently have include the following:

  • What is the proper technique for brushing my child’s teeth?
  • Should I use fluoride toothpaste?
  • What about flossing?
  • Is baby bottle tooth decay a risk?

Your dentist or hygienist will take the time to answer these questions as they relate to you and your child. Feel free to prepare a list of topics to discuss beforehand so you do not forget anything.
